Synthetic Fuel - More Bang, Less Buck
The world is looking for a less expensive and less polluting alternative fuel to power aircraft. Research is underway on coal-to-liquid, gas-to-liquid and biomass-to-liquid. The US Air Force has an extensive program to implement the use of Synfuel. Life-cycle analysis, certification and real-benefits analysis is being undertaken by FAA. Second generation bio-fuel efforts aim to use non-food crop biomass. What else is on the cusp of reality in this exciting and urgently necessary area of research?

Chemical Restriction - REACHing New Processes
The pioneering European initiative known as REACH (Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) aims to eliminate the use of about 3,200 chemicals or substances of which about 800 are widely used in the aerospace industry. Some think this will result in 40% to 50% of the chemicals now being used in MRO to leave the market. How will REACH work? Air Traffic Management - Mastering Space & Time
Airlines say the accelerated implementation of the Single European Sky (SES) must be taken seriously by national authorities - the EC, the EU and the Council - to achieve the predicted 12% emission reductions that would result from a defragmented European sky.
