10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. MRO in Emerging Markets - Quickfire Interviews
Focus on Central Europe and the Mediterranean

As the Middle East continues its strong growth in MRO, neighboring regions are also increasing their capabilities in very entrepreneurial environments. With big shake-ups on the horizon, most airlines are seeking the best way forward. What lessons have been learned so far? How fast do these MROs expect to grow? What are the implications for established European players?
  • Moderator: Crispin Vincenti-Brown, Senior Partner, Bourton Group
  • Abdel Azis Fadel, Chairman & CEO, EgyptAir Maintenance and Engineering
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Breakout Sessions A
11:30 a.m. Update on Alternative Parts Supply (A1)
PMA - Surplus - DER - Presentation and Discussion - What has changed in the past year? What are the positions of the regulators and the airlines? This session offers a brief recap of this ongoing saga and provides a forum for users to share their experiences.
  • Moderator: Kevin Michaels, Principal, AeroStrategy LLC
11:30 a.m.

The Coming Bow Wave (A2)
The CFMs on 737s and A320s are coming due for heavy maintenance over the next few years. At the same time, many low-fare carriers, the biggest narrow-body operators, have fleets that will soon come out of warranty. Will all of this create an uncontrollable surge in maintenance tasks that threaten to wash over MROs like a bow wave? How can we identify when and how hard it will hit? Will there be enough capacity, or will we be swamped?

  • Thomas Gentile, Vice President & General Manage, Services, GE Aviation
12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Breakout Sessions B
12:30 p.m.

Best Practices for Green Maintenance (B1)
Panel interview and round table - Environmental factors affect the entire industry, with growing scrutiny of noise and emissions. The environmental impact of programs, for example cargo conversions, has also become a crucial question for financiers. What are the best green maintenance practices, and how can they be shared throughout the industry? OEMs for instance are interested in helping reduce noise and emissions with engine upgrades. How can MROs contribute to cleaner and greener operational alternatives? Which maintenance procedures can contribute to lower carbon emissions? What role can diagnostics and prognostics play?

  • Pierre Girault, Vice President, Quality Safety Environment & Sustainable Development, Air France Industries
12:30 p.m. Keeping "Data-Rich" from Becoming "Anti-Lean" (B2)
Today's aircraft churn out 100 MB of data for every 10 hours of flight, threatening to overwhelm airlines and offset the recent progress achieved in Lean procedures. How can operators sort out the mass of data generated by these new aircraft? A system is needed that filters out the extraneous and makes sure the necessary comes through. What exists already? Where can we expect further solutions to come from?
1:30 p.m. Lunch Break
(Conference adjourns for the day and all activity moves to the floor of the exhibition hall, where lunch will be available)
5:30 p.m. Cocktail Reception in Exhibition Hall
6:45 p.m.

Thursday, September 25

8:00 a.m. Registration Opens
9:00 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. Welcome
  • Ed Hazelwood, Editorial Director, Aviation Week Conferences
9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Airlines - What the Customer Needs
7.4 hours per day is the average global utilization of regional, narrow and wide-body commercial aircraft combined. The airlines tell the MROs what they need to substantially increase this number while ensuring the soundness, safety and efficiency of airline fleets.
10:15 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Keynote Address
  • Fernando Pinto, CEO, TAP Portugal
10:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Coffee Break
11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. C Breakout Sessions
11:00 a.m. SES - Air Traffic Management Upgrade Mandates (C1)
The upcoming Single European Sky (SES) mandates will require a large number of modifications. With the requirement for carriers to upgrade to the use of ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-Broadcast) and the European ATM Network airlines will have extensive cockpit mods. Is the MRO industry ready? When is this coming and what is required to be ready?
  • Vincent De Vroey, General Manager Technical and Operations, AEA
11:00 a.m. Safety Management Systems (C2)
Europe is in the process of implementing Safety Management Systems in the aircraft maintenance field. What value can airlines and service providers derive from these data collection and analysis systems to continue to improve aviation safety? What burden is created by their implementation? How can they be melded with existing efforts? How can airlines and MROs alike share the data from SMS without compromising competitive advantage?
  • Jean-Marc Cluzeau, Head of Safety, Air France Industries
11:45 am - 12:30 p.m. D Breakout Sessions
11:45 a.m. MRO Feedback Loops (D1)
Numerous organizations have feedback loops built in to improve products, processes and procedures. This session will look at specific feedback partnerships between engine OEMs and MROs. How do these function at their best and what are the benefits? What is the impact of feedback loops on OEM R&D and future engine development? Can these formal arrangements be adopted in other areas of MRO?
11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Cleaner Engines - Synthetic Fuels (D2)
As environmental regulations tighten and fuel prices soar, airlines will seek quieter, cleaner and more economical engines. Synthetic fuels offer a way forward for the aviation industry. What is the state of the art in such fuels? What challenges do bio-fuels present, and how do they impact maintenance?
12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Training and Staff Shortages -- How new technology is improving the quality of training.
How is the shortage of engineers and technicians affecting the industry? How will MROs cope with the shortage when these new aircraft go on line? How do you motivate young trainees, and attract them to MROs? What role can partnerships and apprenticeships play? The industry seems passive about this problem, and not ready to take this issue seriously enough - why?
  • Moderator: Lee Ann Tegtmeier, Managing Editor, Overhaul & Maintenance
1:30 p.m.
