Usciak has been shooting space launches since the liftoff of Apollo 15 in July 1971 as both a freelance and staff photographer for numerous space magazines. He photographed Apollo, Skylab, ASTP and shuttle missions using both medium-format and 35-mm camera systems. Employing both sound-activated remote cameras close to the launch pads and manned telephone systems, Usciak has covered more than 40 shuttle launches and landings since 1981. He now works for the Shadowlight Group, a commercial photography studio in Lancaster, Pa. Usciak was a prize-winner in the 1995 photo contest.
